Executive Functioning (EF) of Expectation refers to the brain actively predicting or anticipating future events/outcomes based on past experiences and current information. It influences planning, reacting, and behaving in a given situation. Other aspects and challenges: 

  • Goal-oriented behavior guides actions to desired outcomes by influencing strategies and action steps, like studying harder for a test to do well.
  • Adaptability for when expectations are not met, to adjust and re-evaluate. Based on a disappointing social interaction, anticipate how another might react in a situation, influencing future behavior.
  • Motivation and engagement to complete a task can be fueled by positive expectations, while negative expectations can lead to discouragement or procrastination.
  • Unrealistic expectations (overly optimistic or pessimistic) leads to disappointment or frustration when reality does not align. Difficulty adjusting expectations to adapt when situations change.
  • Cognitive biases in having preconceived notions or stereotypes influences expectations and causes inaccurate perceptions.
