Excitatory Synapse
« Back to Glossary IndexAn excitatory synapse stimulates/promotes a neuron to fire an action potential, increasing the likelihood of a neuron firing. Excitatory synapses typically release glutamate as their primary neurotransmitter. When activated, it causes depolarization (positive membrane potential) in the postsynaptic neuron that makes it more likely to fire. Also see Inhibitory Synapse
