Endocannabinoid System (ECS)
« Back to Glossary IndexThe endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a widespread regulatory network in the brain and body that helps maintain internal balance. It consists of naturally produced signaling molecules (endocannabinoids), cannabinoid receptors in the brain, and enzymes that break these molecules down after they act. Unlike neurotransmitters (dopamine or serotonin) that are stored and released in bursts, endocannabinoids are produced “on demand. They act like a feedback system — helping quiet excessive neural activity and fine-tune processes (stress response, mood regulation, appetite, pain perception, memory, sleep). Cannabis interacts with this system because THC binds to the same receptors as the body’s own endocannabinoids, but in a stronger and less precisely regulated way, which is why it can significantly alter mood, perception, and sleep patterns.
