Emotion-Focused Coping
« Back to Glossary IndexEmotion-focused coping, also called emotion-centered coping, is a problem-solving technique in which a person tries to control or regulate negative emotional reactions to a problem, rather than try to address the problem itself—especially when the problem can’t be changed or addressed. A teen moving to a new school might address their anxiety by talking to friends from the old school. Also see Approach and Avoidance Coping
