Egotism:

« Back to Glossary Index

Egotism is an inflated, perhaps untenable or unstable, view of self, typically seen in destructive narcissistic variants, such as entitlement or low self-concept. It’s an exaggerated opinion of one’s appearance, talents, and accomplishments. It’s related to an egocentric love for one’s imagined self or narcissism and characterized by pride, conceit, boastfulness, arrogance — with a grandiose sensibility of feeling superior to others — and an overwhelming sense of the centrality of “me.” At the same time, egotists are largely unable or disinterested in recognizing the talents and accomplishments of others. They may criticize others, but not tolerate receiving criticism, which can lead to narcissistic rage. Egotism differs from egoism, the constant pursuit of one’s self-interest. Unlike self-esteem, narcissism is associated with aggression in the face of ego-threat.
