Developmental Language Disorder (DLD)

« Back to Glossary Index

Developmental language disorder (DLD), one of the most common developmental conditions (diagnosed in 1/14 kindergarteners), is a communication disorder affecting children’s ability to understand, learn, and use language. Sign include difficulty finding words, limited vocabulary, using the wrong words or leaving words out when speaking, and difficulty telling a story in order, answering questions, or following instructions. The cause of DLD is unknown, but it’s likely a combination of biology, cognition, and environment.
