De-Masking / Unmasking

« Back to Glossary Index

De-masking is a gradual process of allowing yourself to express your true feelings and emotions, which may take time and patience. It can involve:

  • Embracing vulnerability by being open and sharing experiences to build deeper connections and create a more supportive environment.
  • Challenging stigma and dealing with discrimination, as well as mental health conditions (including trauma), which can be addressed through therapy and by joining community.
  • Exploring one’s mask as a part of defining self-identity, learning about oneself and one’s values, goals, and interests—toward a healthier and more authentic life.
  • Accepting coping skills, including suppressed coping skills, like fidgeting or stimming.
