Compassionate Empathy

« Back to Glossary Index

Compassionate empathy is the ability to understand and share someone’s feelings—and then be moved to g what they feel), and adds a desire to help without becoming overwhelmed by their emotions. It is a key component of healthy social connection and can be more sustainable than pure emotional empathy because it involves maintaining personal boundaries. Why it’s important

  • Sustainable connection with others without the risk of emotional exhaustion that can come from feeling too much of someone else’s pain.
  • Effective helping, moving beyond sympathy or a simple desire to “fix” things to taking meaningful, selfless action to improve another person’s situation.
  • Healthy relationships by fostering a sense of being truly present with another person, which builds stronger and healthier relationships.
