Compassionate Communication / Conversation

« Back to Glossary Index

Compassionate communication, also called Nonviolent Communication (NVC), fosters deep connection and understanding of ourselves and others. It involves listening empathically, choosing words carefully, distinguishing between our observations—our story about what happened. Developed by psychologist Marshall Rosenberg, NVC aims to connect deeply and resolve conflict peacefully by addressing underlying feelings and needs rather than just surface issues. In a compassionate conversation, we express ourselves clearly, honestly, and respectfully, using I over you statements. We avoid blame/criticism, focus on the situation/not the person, and notice unmet needs driving each other’s behavior.
