Coming Out:

« Back to Glossary Index

Coming out is the process of accepting and sharing one’s gender identity or sexual orientation with others. Coming out to parents, family, colleagues, and friends can be one of the most difficult and important life decisions for LGBTQ+ youth and young adults to make. Feeling safe enough is different for everyone—and entails a level of privilege not necessarily available to all. It’s difficult and intimidating to guess how people are going to react. Research shows coming out and living authentically reduce suicidality and decrease biomarkers associated with stress (blood pressure, cortisol, adrenaline). Living one’s life honestly allows for greater self-esteem, closer relationships, and connection to the LGBTQ+ community and resources.
