Coherent Sense of Identity:

« Back to Glossary Index

A coherent sense of identity is a clear, consistent, unified, and well-organized understanding of self, including our values, beliefs, goals, and experiences. It’s  significant in identity formation, when we gradually integrate different aspects of our life experiences, relationships, and self-reflection. Having a stable perception of ourself across different situations is often linked to higher self-esteem, better mental health, and a stronger sense of purpose. A lack of coherence can lead us to experience confusion about self-image, values, or goals, leading to uncertainty and potential distress.
