Cognitive Therapy (CT)

« Back to Glossary Index

Cognitive therapy, a type of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), aims to alleviate distress and improve wellbeing by focusing on changing thoughts influencing emotions/behaviors. It’s effective and relatively short-term (6 months or less). Based on our experiences, we learn to identify and understand negative, often automatic thoughtscognitive distortions—that produce upsetting feelings. We can assess and improve the accuracy of our thoughts, think in more balanced ways, and have more control over once-overwhelming emotions. CT treats depression, anxiety, phobias, panic disorders, eating disorders, substance abuse disorder (SUD), OCD, personality disorders, stress-related hypertension or chronic pain, and relationship issues.
