Cognitive Shifting
« Back to Glossary IndexCognitive shifting is similar but contrasts to task-shifting, as it involves consciously changing attention. It’s a specific switching mechanism that enables cognitive flexibility tooccur, mentally transitioning from one area of focus, perspective, or activity to another—like trying a new strategy if the current one isn’t working. Cognitive shifting allows us to modify our actions or behaviors in response to changing circumstances. The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is activated in cognitive shifting. Developmental studies show that cognitive shifting changes significantly during preschool years. Also see Neurocognitive System
