Cognitive Flexibility:

« Back to Glossary Index

Cognitive flexibility is an executive function that directs our ability to adjust thinking and behavior based on change, so we can mentally shift to different strategies, consider different viewpoints and approaches to a problem, adapt to new situations, and change our approach when needed. We can do this without getting stuck — it’s our ability to “think outside the box” or “mentally switch gears” — a skill crucial for learning new things and navigating complex situations, like adapting a communication style to different people.
