Cognitive Dissonance

« Back to Glossary Index

Cognitive dissonance is the psychological discomfort we experience when holding two+ conflicting thoughts or beliefs at once or when we behave in a way that clashes with our beliefs. To resolve this tension, we may be motivated to change our beliefs, justify our behavior, or ignore conflicting information. This state of inconsistency can lead to feelings of stress, guilt, or unease. Also see Impression Management
