Cognitive Control Theory

« Back to Glossary Index

Cognitive control theory (executive control) suggests the mind can adapt behavior to achieve higher-level goals and reduce uncertainty, especially when there’s competition for limited resources or when achieving the best response requires more thinking and consideration. Executive control helps us process information and vary or adapt behavior to achieve goals, inhibit or suppress actions that are automatic but inappropriate (studying for exam, not checking SM), be flexible in meeting current demands by adapting to the social context, and be more self-aware, gain willpower, and more consciousness.
