Child Ego State

« Back to Glossary Index

The child ego state, a core concept in Eric Berne’s transactional analysis (TA), represents our feelings, thoughts, and behaviors as we experienced them in childhood. TA In therapy works with the child state to heal past wounds, foster emotional flexibility, and integrate  early patterns with the adult ego state and present-day reality. Understanding our child ego state can help us recognize when we’re reacting from old patterns rather than a present-day adult perspective, allowing for more conscious choices and healthier interactions. The child ego state is split into two:

  • Free/natural child (playful, creative, joyful, but also impulsive or unconstrained) — singing loudly in the car, getting excited by a new idea
  • Adapted child (shaped by parental/societal rules to fit in or survive) — feeling shame and hiding when caught doing something wrong (compliance) or secretly defying rules (rebellion).
