Chemosensory System
« Back to Glossary IndexA chemosensory system is a specialized sensory system that detects chemicals in the environment and includes both the senses of smell and taste. Chemosignals bind to sensory receptors in the nose and mouth. The now activated receptors to send signals to the brain, which processes the signals and initiates a response. Examples of chemosensory system responses: increased salivation, tearing, sweating, vasodilation, nasal secretion, bronchoconstriction, and decreased respiratory rate. These systems help us screen for potentially harmful or useful compounds.
