Chemoreceptors
« Back to Glossary IndexChemoreceptors are sensory receptors thatdetect and respond to chemical stimuli, like those leading to the sense of smell (olfactory receptors in the olfactory skin layer of the nasal roof) or to receptors for taste (gustatory receptors in the taste buds on the tongue). Olfactory receptors and axons together form the olfactory nerve, which extends to the brain’s olfactory bulb and to the limbic system’s olfactory cortex. Chemoreceptors also respond to changes in internal body chemistry, including variations of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen ions in the blood. Also see Pheromones
