Cerebrum
« Back to Glossary IndexThe cerebrum is the largest of the brain’s three main parts (with the cerebellum and brainstem) and is responsible for higher-level functions like cognition (reasoning, memory, language, intelligence, perception), motor (controlling voluntary muscle movement), and sensory interpretation (processing information from all senses). It’s divided into left and right hemispheres, which are connected by the corpus callosum — allowing them to communicate. It outer layer, the cerebral cortex(or gray matter), with a wrinkled surface that increases surface area for neurons, produce higher-order functions: language, memory, reasoning, thought, learning, decision-making, emotion, intelligence, personality, performance monitoring. The cerebrum is further divided into four lobes each handling specific tasks. Also see Cerebral Cortex
