Cathect
« Back to Glossary IndexCathect in psychoanalysis — particularly Freudian theory — means investing emotional energy (libido) in an object, idea, or person, forming a mental/emotional connection with something external to oneself and imbuing it with significance or importance. It can be positive or negative, like love, hate, or fear. For example, a child might cathect with a favorite toy, or an adult might cathect with a career aspiration. While related to love, cathexis can be seen as a more basic, initial stage of emotional investment, whereas love might involve a more enduring commitment. The way we cathect with things can influence our behavior, relationships, and overall psychological wellbeing.
