Brain stimulation therapies are among other options are available to treat severe bipolar disorder symptoms — perhaps more effectively for bipolar depression — when medication and therapy are not effective. These therapies directly stimulate the brain with electricity, magnets, or surgical implants. Research continues to advance these increasingly safe and effective treatment options.
