Brain

« Back to Glossary Index

The brain, a complex organ located inside the skull, controls all bodily functions, including thought, memory, emotion, movement, and sensation. It acts as central control for the body. It receives, interprets, and responds to sensory information from the environment (sight, sound, smell, taste, touch) and from within the body (temperature, pain, hunger or fullness, heartrate, respiration), initiates movement, regulates body functions like temperature and breathing, and stores memories. The brain is composed of the cerebrum (largest part), cerebellum (coordinates movement), and brainstem (controls basic life functions), is made up of billions of nerve cells, and is part of the central nervous system (CNS) alongside the spinal cord.
