Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)
« Back to Glossary IndexBPD affects all aspects of life, stemming from insecure attachment style and not trusting others to remain in their lives — yet their emotions and self-identities depend on relationships with others. Theories for why people with BPD struggle with identity seems to result from inconsistent internal experiences and outward actions. Emotional instability, impulsive behavior, cognitive distortion, and dichotomous (black-and-white) thinking make it difficult to form a coherent or stable sense of self. Many with BPD or identity disturbance come from chaotic/abusive backgrounds. BPD also shares a comorbid spectrum disorder with bipolar disorder. Also see Personality Disorders
