Benzodiazepines (Sedatives)

« Back to Glossary Index

Sedatives are central nervous system depressants, generally used on a short-term basis to treat acute anxiety. They can be habit-forming, causing mental or physical dependence. Benzodiazepines cause dangerous side effects with alcohol or other unregulated or prescription drugs. Many people use anti-anxiety medication when psychotherapies and coping skills strategies work just as well or better—minus the side effects and safety concerns. Benzodiazepines approved for treating panic disorder include:

  • Alprazolam (Xanax)

Clonazepam (Klonopin)
