Belonging Confusion or Belonging Uncertainty

« Back to Glossary Index

Belonging confusion is the feeling of not knowing if you belong in a social environment when you feel out of place or your sense of belonging is threatened. Psychologists say this sense of belonging is a core part of what makes a person human and can lead to many positive life outcomes. Feeling uncertain can be associated with feeling like your life lacks meaning and purpose, with increased risks of mental and physical health problems and reduced longevity. Contributing factors include: existing between two contrasting cultures, rigid expectations for how you should behave, childhood experiences. Strategies to help include: being aware of your desire to belong, focusing on your good qualities, taking small steps toward connecting by joining a group, volunteering, taking a class.
