Behavioral Self-Regulation
« Back to Glossary IndexBehavioral self-regulation is the ability to control and manage our own actions and behaviors according to personal goals and values, acting in our long-term best interest. It allows us to consciously choose how we respond to situations even when faced with strong emotions or impulses. It’s essential to emotional intelligence where we actively monitor and adjust our behavior based on the situation and desired outcome. It consists of:
- Controlling impulses by pausing/thinking before reacting to immediate urges or situations.
- Adapting to situations based on the context and social norms.
- Goal-oriented actions toward long-term goals, even when faced with distractions.
- Self-awareness of our own emotions and how they might influence our behavior.
