Behavioral Inhibition System (BIS)
« Back to Glossary IndexThe behavioral inhibition system (BIS) is a motivational system in reinforcement sensitivity theory (RST) that regulates responses to uncertainty, potential threat, or situations involving possible punishment. BIS activation may increase caution, vigilance, or avoidance behavior as we evaluate risk. High BIS sensitivity can contribute to stronger responses to perceived threat or uncertainty, while low BIS may relate to reduced inhibitory responses. Like BAS, BIS is a theoretical model for understanding behavior and emotional patterns rather than a diagnostic label.
