Ayres Sensory Integration (ASI):

« Back to Glossary Index

Ayres sensory integration (ASI) is an evidence-based, sensory processing treatment, used by occupational therapists (OT) to help mostly children with autism, developmental delays, and learning difficulties. Its structured methods focus on how the brain processes and integrates sensory information, like touch, sight, sound, movement, and body awareness (proprioception). Developed by Anna Jean Ayres, therapists today identify a child’s specific sensory needs and design tailored interventions using play-based activities, like swinging, vestibular stimulation (balance activities), deep pressure, tactile input (different textures), and proprioceptive exercises. Studies show ASI can improve areas like motor skills, attention, behavior regulation, social interaction, and self-care abilities.
