Avoidance Motivation:
« Back to Glossary IndexAvoidance motivation is the drive to avoid the source of conflict, negative emotions, or undesirable outcomes. In contrast to approach motivation, avoidance motivation includes fear, anxiety, actions like hiding or finishing a task with little effort, or emotions and thoughts related to punishment, threat, or failure. It can be useful in the short term to avoid immediate dangers. But over the long term, it can lead to focusing on what’s easy or lacking — which can make it harder to live authentically, aligned with one’s values.
