Attentional Filtering:

« Back to Glossary Index

Attentional filtering is part of attention allocation — it’s the brain’s way of selecting out and actively ignoring “noise” (irrelevant stimuli) and focusing on what’s important or relevant — like blocking out background talk and music while concentrating on a conversation. Broadbent’s filter model suggests stimuli are filtered at an early stage of information processing — based on color, pitch, or direction — preventing overload.
