Attention Allocation:
« Back to Glossary IndexAttention allocation is a top-down cognitive control (executive function) process in our neurocognitive system, so we can decide where to focus to reach our goals. Specifically, it helps us selectively process limited mental/attentional resources across various stimuli or tasks, based on their importance or relevance. By allocating attention to specific stimuli and ignoring distractions, we enhance the encoding and processing of that information, making it more likely to be remembered. Examples of attention allocation in action:
- Actively attending to a person’s voice to effectively filter out background noise.
- Strategically scan a crowded shelf to focus on potential locations where a specific item might be.
- While driving, monitoring the primary road ahead and in car mirrors to maintain safety
