Assertiveness

« Back to Glossary Index

Assertiveness is a healthy, adaptive personality trait that shows up in many contexts, including in individuals with narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). It’s the ability to express our needs, opinions, and feelings in a direct, honest, and respectful manner. Characteristics of assertiveness include speaking up for ourselves, saying “no” when necessary, standing up for our beliefs, setting boundaries in relationships, and clearly communicating our thoughts and feelings.
