Arousal and Regulatory System

« Back to Glossary Index

The arousal and regulatory system (one of six domains in the Research Domain Criteria/RDoC framework) helps the body maintain an optimal level of physiological alertness and activation. It increases/decreases arousal as needed, ensuring we can react with heightened alertness during a demanding task or calm down to relax. Balanced arousal regulation is crucial for cognitive performance, attention, motivation, and emotional control. This complex network of neural pathways — controlled by brain regions (cerebral cortex, hypothalamus, and the brainstem’s reticular activating system/RAS) — interact to adapt to change by regulating sleep-wake cycles, attention, and emotional responses.
