Appraisal:
« Back to Glossary IndexAppraisal, a strategy in the status pursuit in narcissism (SPIN) model, is how narcissists assess situations and perceive the potential for status gain, often leading them to prioritize self-promotion or, if necessary, other-derogation (belittling or lashing out). Narcissists tend to perceive situations as opportunities for status enhancement and therefore appraise them as facilitating self-promotion. But they may resort to other-derogation if self-promotion isn’t enough for them to achieve their goals of supremacy and dominance. Narcissists have a heightened sense of entitlement and belief in their own superiority (and others’ inferiority), which can lead to exaggerated expectations of status acquisition.
