Applied Relaxation (AR):

« Back to Glossary Index

Applied relaxation (AR) are mind-body exercises for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) to identify panic stressors, relax rapidly, counteract, and stop anxiety reactions. Relaxation techniques decrease muscle tension before anxiety cycle strengthens—relaxing in the presence of panic cues followed by real-world situations. AR techniques include sustained deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, guided imagery, and systematic desensitization. Research studies show AR results—used for phobias, panic disorder, headache, pain, epilepsy, and tinnitus—were significantly better than no-treatment and as effective as other therapies. After a year, there were benefits or further improvements.
