Appetitive or Approach Behavior:

« Back to Glossary Index

Appetitive or approach behavior is actively seeking a desired stimulus or reward — “approaching” something considered pleasurable or beneficial (searching for food when hungry or talking to someone you’d like to date). In contrast to consummatory behavior (act of consuming the reward), appetitive behaviors are more variable and flexible, involving searching or exploring to find the reward. Motivation comes from expectations of receiving a positive outcome. It’s also in contrast with aversive behavior, where we move away from a negative or harmful stimulus. Also see Reward System
