Suicide and Suicide Ideation (or Thoughts): Most often, suicidal thoughts arise from feeling unable to cope with what seems to be overwhelming life situations. Someone feeling hopeless may mistakenly think suicide is a solution—narrowing options when in the middle of a crisis. There also may be a genetic link—people who complete suicide or who have suicidal thoughts or behavior are more likely to have a family history of suicide. Bipolar disorder carries a higher risk of suicide than for the general population. To someone who might be suicidal, we should ask the tough question: “Are you considering suicide?” and listen without judgment. Anyone or anyone’s family member needs to call a suicide hotline:

  • In the U.S., call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, available all day, every day. Or use the Lifeline Chat at 988lifeline.org/chat/. Services are free and confidential.
  • Call 911 in the U.S. or your local emergency number. Text TALK to 741741 to communicate with a trained crisis counselor
