Future Faking:
Future faking is lying, distorting reality, or promising something about the narcissist’s possible future to get what they want in the present. It’s one of the most prominent yet subtle tools used by people with strong narcissistic tendencies and other dark personality traits. If we interact with a narcissist, we have probably witnessed future faking in its most detrimental form, as in their promising they’ll call you later and never calling. Or promising to take us a vacation and never making that happen. Or even proposing marriage to make us complacent and control us in the present. A skilled manipulator can prey on our dreams and goals to generate a possible future so they can string us along for now. These promises are destined to be broken and can be seen as a form of overpromising and underdelivering. They keep promising and using other forms of coercive control, passive and active abuse, until it’s just easier to go along with whatever the manipulator wants.
