Fluid Intelligence:

Fluid intelligence is the ability to think logically, solve novel problems, and identify patterns and relationships without relying on prior knowledge or past experience. It’s our “raw” cognitive horsepower and ability to think on our feet. Characteristics:

  • Independent of learned knowledge, involves problem-solving in situations where existing knowledge or learned skills do not directly apply, like figuring out how to use a new piece of electronics without instructions.
  • Abstract reasoning and use of logical deduction to understand complex, new concepts, like solving a logic puzzle.
  • Adaptability and flexibility to apply understanding to new and changing circumstances, like navigating a new city with a map or GPS.
  • Closely linked to working memory—the mental system used to hold and manipulate information for short periods to make decisions or solve problems.
