Dendrites

Dendrites, also called Receiving or Postsynaptic Terminals, are finger-like projections extending from the neuron’s soma (nerve cell’s body). Their extra surface area maximizes their ability to receive electrochemical signals via neurotransmitters sent across the synaptic gap. Dendrites come in many shapes and can be highly branched—either encapsulated (in connective tissue) or free (nonencapsulated)—extending from the soma and near blood vessels, in joints, and elsewhere. Also see Post-Synaptic Neurons and Neurons
